Refreshing Homemade Milo Lemonade for summers

Lemonades

Milo’s Lemonade Copycat Recipe

Milo’s Lemonade is a bottled lemonade from Milo’s Tea Company. The name refers to the company, not to Milo chocolate malt powder. This homemade version uses fresh lemon juice, cane sugar and filtered water for a tart-sweet pitcher inspired by the bottled drink. It is our own recipe, not Milo’s proprietary formula. Milo’s lists water, cane sugar, lemon juice from concentrate and natural flavors for its bottled lemonade.

METHOD

How to make it

  1. Juice the lemons. Roll them on the counter, cut and squeeze. Strain out seeds; keep or remove the pulp to your taste.
  2. Dissolve the sugar. Warm 1 cup of the water with the cane sugar in a small saucepan, stirring until clear. Take it off the heat and let the syrup cool.
  3. Mix the pitcher. Combine the lemon juice, cooled syrup and remaining 4 cups of filtered water. Stir well.
  4. Taste and chill. If too tart, add a little more dissolved sugar; if too sweet, add water or lemon juice. Refrigerate until cold, or serve straight away over plenty of ice.
  5. Serve. Stir the pitcher again and pour over ice. Add lemon slices or mint if you like.

Recipe notes

For a less sweet variation, start with 3/4 cup sugar and adjust after mixing. Add ice to individual glasses to avoid diluting the pitcher.

Tips and substitutions

  • For less sweetness: Start with 3/4 cup sugar in the syrup, then taste the finished drink. This changes the balance from the recipe above.
  • For a smoother drink: Strain the lemon juice before mixing. Fresh lemon juice gives this homemade version a different flavor from the bottled product’s concentrate.
  • For bubbles: Replace some of the water with chilled sparkling water at serving time. Add it to each glass to keep the pitcher from going flat.
  • For make-ahead: Mix and refrigerate the lemonade without ice. Stir before serving and add ice to the glasses so the pitcher does not become diluted.
